In a letter to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, former president Mohammad Khatami condemned violent and extremist actions around the world, which are carried out under various banners, and appealed the United Nations, international organizations and peace activists to take effective action in this regard, IRNA reported on Sunday.

“Terrorism and violence is neither a war between religion and freedom or a dispute between the East and the West, nor is it a confrontation between sects, races and nations, but it is a new and serious threat which has various root causes that should be stemmed to pull the world back from the edge of the precipice of extremism,” Khatami said. “For my part, I propose that the United Nations take a courageous step on this path and calls in scholars, thinkers, intellectuals, politicians, governments and civil institutions to take immediate action with the aim of achieving a historic reconciliation, which is one of the objectives of dialogue among cultures and civilizations,” he added.
