In a telephone conversation with Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on Sunday, President Hassan Rouhani called for closer economic and political relations.

Highlighting Iran’s engineering capabilities, Rouhani said, “Iranian companies are willing to export technical and engineering services [to Qatar], particularly for partnership in carrying out construction projects in Qatar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup,” Tasnim News Agency reported.

Calling for added efforts to facilitate the activities of Iranian and Qatari businesses, he proposed enhancing port and maritime cooperation by “establishing a joint shipping line”. There is no obstacle to stronger mutual cooperation,” the president added.

  Stance on JCPOA

He appreciated the stance adopted by Europe, Russia, China, Turkey and Qatar on the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, saying that such support for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and opposition to illegal US sanctions can and should be accompanied by practical measures. The emir expressed his country’s willingness to boost ties with Iran in all fields.

Sheikh Hamad thanked Iran for backing his country against the “cruel” sanctions and blockade imposed by Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries.  Voicing Qatar’s opposition to the violation of the JCPOA and the escalating tensions between Iran and the US, he said Doha wants cordial ties with Tehran and favors a peaceful solution to political conflicts.
