Head of the National Wisdom Movement of Iraq Ammar al-Hakim has welcomed cordial relations between Baghdad and Tehran, and said Iran has greatly helped his country in fighting the terrorist groups. “Iran has special ties with its neighbors, particularly Iraq, which should be taken into account by other countries,” Hakim said, Fars News Agency reported. He urged regional countries to engage in constructive talks to put an end to regional conflicts. In relevant remarks earlier in the month, Ammar al-Hakim deplored the US unilateral sanctions against Iran. “We believe that weakening Iran will neither benefit Iraq nor any of the regional states that want to impose an economic siege on the country, as the aftershocks of this move will not be limited to Iran and affect the entire region,” the Iraqi cleric said. Iraq’s Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on August 7 his country would abide by US sanctions against Iran to protect Iraq’s own interests, causing tensions in Tehran-Baghdad relations.

Soon afterwards he retracted his position and said his country will continue doing business with Iran using currencies other than the US dollar.
