Doom of Action Group a Foregone Conclusion

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Sunday that a newly created Iran Action Group in the US State Department aims to overthrow the Iranian state, but it will fail.

“65 years ago today, the US overthrew the popularly elected democratic government of Dr. Mossadegh, restoring the dictatorship & subjugating Iranians for the next 25 years. Now an “Action Group” dreams of doing the same through pressure, misinformation & demagoguery. Never again,” Zarif wrote on his Twitter account.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Thursday named senior policy adviser Brian Hook as special representative for Iran in charge of the Iran Action Group to coordinate President Donald Trump’s pressure campaign against the Islamic Republic following Washington’s withdrawal from a nuclear deal with Tehran.

On August 19, 1953, an American-led military coup toppled Iran's first democratically elected government of prime minister Mohammad Mossadegh, a move described in a declassified CIA document "as an act of US foreign policy", restoring to power Mohammed Reza Shah Pahlavi. The Islamic Revolution in 1979 put an end to the half century plus Pahlavi rule.

For the past 65 years, the inauspicious US interference has haunted ties between Tehran and Washington–and in recent months has taken on a new significance amid a renewed diplomatic standoff following US President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal and reimpose sanctions.

***Hypocrisy

Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said the US and UK role in devising the 1953 coup d'état in Iran is a “manifestation of their hypocrisy.”

“One of the manifestations of hypocrisy in history was the painful event of the coup d'état, which was crafted  by the US and Britain, which overthrew the national government of Mossadeq and placed Iran under their  domination for several decades,” Larijani told an open session of the Majlis on Sunday.

“Today, this imperialist hypocrisy is visible again in another form in Iran’s nuclear case and its regional influence and defense power,” he said.

“The Americans shamelessly talk of imposing economic sanctions on Iran [under the pretext of] protecting freedom, human rights and global and regional security,” the senior MP said.
