President Hassan Rouhani in a letter to his Italian counterpart, offered condolences over the deaths and injuries caused by the collapse of a giant motorway bridge in Genoa.

In a letter to President Sergio Mattarella on Thursday, Rouhani said he was deeply saddened by the news of the death of Italians in the collapse of the Morandi Bridge in  Genoa, his official website reported.

He expressed condolences to the Italian people and government and the families of victims.

A section of a towering highway bridge collapsed Tuesday, sending vehicles plunging nearly 300 feet to the ground and killing at least 39 people, officials said.

The collapse of the bridge occurred around midday during strong storms moving through the area of northwest Italy.

There will be a national day of mourning on Saturday to coincide with the funerals of victims.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte declared a 12-month state of emergency in the Liguria region.
