Turkey Says Never Supports Sanctions

Ankara has never supported the anti-Russian sanctions and will never support those against Iran, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Monday. "Turkey has never supported any sanctions against Russia. We have already said that we are not going to support sanctions against Iran either," he said at a news conference with his visiting Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, TASS reported. He called on Washington to drop its "erroneous position on sanctions." Last month, Turkey told American officials it opposes US sanctions on Iran and is not obliged to implement them. “We do not have to adhere to the sanctions imposed on a country by another country. We don’t find the sanctions right either,” Cavusoglu said. “We held meetings with the United States in Ankara and told them openly: Turkey gets oil and gas from Azerbaijan, Iran, Russia and Iraq. If I don’t buy from Iran now, where am I supposed to meet that need from?” he said. US President Donald Trump pulled out of a 2015 nuclear pact with Iran and reimposed economic sanctions on Tehran.
