President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev condemned the US sanctions against Iran, saying his country treats Iran like a brother and in accordance with international law.
In a meeting with President Hassan Rouhani on the sidelines of the Caspian summit in Kazakhstan at the weekend, the Azeri leader said his country condemns the American sanctions against the Iranian people, Tasnim News Agency reported.
Azerbaijan’s stance towards Iran is in line with fraternity and international law, Aliyev noted.
He assured Rouhani that “nobody” can harm the brotherly ties between the two neighbors.
For his part, Rouhani highlighted the deep-rooted Iran-Azeri cultural and religious bonds, saying Iran believes in brotherly ties with the Republic of Azerbaijan.
“By building the level of cooperation and coordination, Tehran and Baku will not allow ill-wishers to harm bilateral relations,” Rouhani noted.
Pointing to the opportunities available for closer ties, the president called for efforts to accelerate the implementation of bilateral agreements and joint projects.
Rouhani returned to Tehran late Sunday after taking part in the Caspian summit that concluded with the signing of a long-awaited convention on the legal regime of the lake.
Five littoral states–Iran, Russia, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and the Republic of Azerbaijan–signed the landmark deal on the Caspian legal status in the Kazakh city of Aktau.
