In response to a letter by the judiciary head seeking permission to take special legal action against, and prosecute  those involved in, economic malpractice, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution approved the request and called for “swift and just” legal action against economic saboteurs. Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said, “Punishment for those found guilty of economic corruption must be carried on urgently and justly. Appropriate meticulousness must be upheld in the sentences issued by courts," his official website reported on Saturday.  The current special economic conditions are tantamount to economic war,  Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani said in his letter to the Leader, calling for setting up special courts to deal quickly with financial crime, state TV reported. New courts will be set up for two years to pass maximum sentences on those “disrupting and corrupting the economy”, Larijani said in the letter. The rial currency has lost about half of its value since April under the threat of revived US sanctions, with heavy demand for dollars among ordinary Iranians trying to protect their savings. The cost of living has also soared, sparking sporadic demonstrations against profiteering and corruption.
