Police Chief General Hossein Ashtari said Iran and Iraq should boost cooperation in border issues to reduce the menace of terrorism along the joint frontiers.  Speaking Sunday in a meeting with Iraqi Border Commander Brigadier General Hamed Aabdullah Ibrahim al-Hosseini and his accompanying delegation in Tehran, Ashtari saidd, “Given the presence of terrorist groups in some border areas to destabilize these regions, expanding cooperation between the security forces of the two countries is inevitable,” Mehr News Agency reported. Expansion of security in the border areas is one of the main tasks of the Iranian and Iraqi border guard chambers, he said. Ashtari expressed readiness of his forces to cooperate with the Iraqi police and said, “In the current situation, we should cooperate and foil the malicious plots of enemies.” Ibrahim al-Hosseini commended Iran for the security assistance it has given the Baghdad government, saying the two countries’ common borders have been quite safe during Iraq’s long fight against the so-called Islamic State terrorist group.
