A lawmaker says the next level of cooperation with Syria will be in the realm of post-war reconstruction in the Arab country.
“Syrians have often said they trust Iran both during the period of fighting terrorism and during the reconstruction process,” Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, chairman of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said on Thursday, Mehr News Agency reported.
Touching upon remarks made by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy to Syria, who had said that Russia and Israel have reached an agreement on Iranian forces pulling back from the occupied Golan Heights, the MP said Iran’s military presence in Syria is upon the official invitation of Damascus and does not depend on decisions of third parties.
He stressed that Iranian forces would withdraw as soon as both Iran and Syria decide to do so, which would then prompt the next level of cooperation between the two countries. He did not elaborate.
The decisions made by the Zionist regime have no effect in Syria, and Iran will act independently, he added. The Syrian civil war, now entering its eighth year, has killed hundreds of thousands of people and driven more than 11 million from their homes.
