IRGC Chief Says No Time for Gov’t Lassitude

The commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps criticized the Rouhani administration for not taking a strong action in the economic war launched by enemies that is pushing up consumer prices through the roof. He has appealed to the president to take “revolutionary” action and decisions to handle the worsening situation.

In a letter to President Hassan Rouhani, Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari reminded the administration of its obligation to effectively manage the economy while it enjoys the support of the masses, Tasnim News Agency reported.

The commander said that the strong support for Rouhani’s administration in recent weeks from all those who care about the Islamic Revolution should not prevent his government from taking “revolutionary action” to avert the unusual increase in the prices of goods and gold amid the “economic war” launched by hostile powers.

He recommended the president to address and remove  the shortcomings and mismanagement of the economy by his own aides and ministers.

      Weakness of Ministers

“Making major decisions in the current tough situation in order to counter the enemies’ economic pressures demands revolutionary resolve and firm action against lassitude and weakness of certain managers, so that people feel hopeful about your administration’s prudent management,” Jafari said.

Stressing the need for closer coordination in and among government sectors, the commander assured the president of support from all revolutionary forces, and said that people are impatiently waiting to see revolutionary decisions by the president.

Forex and gold prices have shot up as never before and the national currency has plunged to record lows against the US dollar in the unofficial market, selling for over 110,000 rials.

There has been growing demand for dollars among ordinary Iranians, who fear more plunge in the value of their assets and growing price of goods, even those not imported from abroad.

The immediate effect of this has been steep rise in food and dairy prices along with almost all home and electric appliances that has caused deep discontent and frustration among the people, especially fixed-wage earners and those at the lower-end of the economic ladder.
