Drunk Driver Kills 5

A drunk driver on Saturday hit six municipality workers in Tehran, killing five, Tehran’s Traffic Police chief said.  Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Mehmandar said the deadly car accident occurred at 6:40 am (local time) in Babaei Freeway in the northwest part of the city, Tasnim News Agency reported.   “The car hit 6 municipality workers while they were sitting on the curb of the highway waiting for a bus to pick them up,” he said, adding that as a result of the accident, three people died on the spot and three others were taken to a hospital. Names and other details of the driver and the victims were not released. Two other men who were injured in the mishap later died in hospital. “Unfortunately, in a [breath alcohol] test taken from the driver and passengers, it was confirmed that the three of them were not in normal conditions and had consumed alcohol,” Mehmandar said. It was not clear how many people were in the car at the time of the accident. Driving very fast during wee hours on empty Tehran highways is among the enjoyment of some rich young people living in the upscale neighborhoods in the city of 12 million people.
