Ali Chegini has been appointed as the new ambassador to India.

Chegini, who has served as Foreign Ministry’s director general for consular affairs, will serve as the new senior envoy to that country, Mehr News Agency reported.

He will fill the vacant post almost six months after his predecessor’s mission ended in New Delhi.

The diplomat previously served as ambassador to Havana, Cuba.

He will replace Gholamreza Ansari who was appointed as deputy for economic affairs at the Foreign Ministry in February.

Trade ties between the two countries are dominated by Indian import of Iranian crude oil. India is the second largest buyer of Iranian crude after China.

According to India’s Foreign Ministry, Indo-Iran trade during the fiscal year 2016-17 reached $12.8 billion.

India is also investing in Iran’s key Chabahar Port, which allows India to ship goods to Afghanistan by bypassing its rival Pakistan.
