A leading Pakistani newspaper says it is evident from the visit of a top Iranian general’s visit to Pakistan that regional cooperation is an important instrument in the foreign policy making establishment in both capitals. ‘The Nation’ in its editorial said the three-day visit by Chief of General Staff Major General Mohammad Bagheri’s to Pakistan holds great importance. “The recent tour of the Iranian general and his meetings with top government officials in Islamabad reflects that the two countries have realized that the changing geopolitical situation in the region demands both nations come closer,” the editorial said. It added that credit goes to Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Qamar Bajwa who broke the ice with his visit to Iran in November last year. “The primary focus of the two generals’ meetings was border security and enhancing collaboration to achieve the desired objectives. Indeed, improved border security protocols between the two neighbors are of utmost importance for both sides considering the presence of terrorist outfits like Daesh [Islamic State],” the newspaper wrote. Baqeri arrived in Pakistan on Monday for a three-day visit.
