In a meeting with Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain in Islamabad on Tuesday, Chairman of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces said the two countries plan to jointly manufacture defense equipment.
“We are endeavoring to produce joint defense products with Pakistan,” General Baqeri said on the second day of his visit to the neighboring country, Fars News Agency reported.
During the talks, the two sides touched on the common stances and issues related to the 1,000-kilometer joint border, stressing that Tehran-Islamabad ties should be enhanced in key areas.
Earlier in the day, Baqeri sat down with Foreign Minister Abdullah Hussain Haroon.
Haroon said his country is interested in strengthening cooperation with Iran in areas of mutual interest for the benefit of the two peoples and help ensure peace and stability in the region, according to a foreign ministry statement.
Haroon said Pakistan and Iran have enjoyed religious and socio-cultural affinities. The bilateral relations have continued to strengthen with regular reciprocal visits during the past few years.
During the meeting, it was noted that both countries have made progress in areas of trade, connectivity, cultural relations and expanding people-to-people contacts, the statement said.
There is considerable scope to enhance the relations further. The minister briefed Bagheri on the upcoming general elections in Pakistan, expressing the desire of the government for a free, fair and transparent electoral process.
The two sides also discussed issues related to Afghanistan and other matters of mutual concern.
Baqeri arrived in Pakistan on Monday for an official visit. He has already held talks with his Pakistani counterpart, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Zubair Mahmood Hayat and Chief of Pakistani Naval Staff Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi.
