President’s Envoy Confers With Mahathir

President Hassan Rouhani’s special envoy conferred with  Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Monday.

Masoumeh Ebtekar delivered the president’s message to the Malaysian leader and congratulated him on his victory in the recent election, IRNA reported.

The meeting lasted for 40 minutes.

A bloc led by Mahathir, 93, won a simple majority in parliament in the May elections, winning 122 out of 222 seats, enough to form the next government.

Ebtekar is the first official to visit since elections in the country.

The Malaysian prime minister emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation. The two sides also discussed regional and international issues.

  Meeting With Foreign Minister

Ebtekar, who is also vice president for women's affairs, met with Malaysia's Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah on Monday and discussed international and regional developments.

In the meeting, held in Putrajaya, the Iran nuclear deal was highlighted as an international agreement and its implementation was reemphasized.

Putrajaya is the federal seat of government of Malaysia.

She elaborated on Iran's views on the nuclear deal and expectations from the international community, including the country's economic and trade partners.

The two sides reviewed bilateral relations and ways of boosting cooperation as well as international and regional developments.

Iran is Malaysia's fourth largest trading partner in the West Asia region.

President Hassan Rouhani paid an official visit to Malaysia in 2016. Mahathir, known as the architect of modern Malaysia, has had cordial relations with Iran when he first became prime minister in 1981.
