An ex-diplomat and former nuclear negotiator said Sunday that Iran will resist the US interference and pressure tactics despite the economic pressures imposed.

“Iran has suffered and could suffer serious losses from the economic sanctions but will resist the US pressures and interference,” Hossein Mousavian said at a Group of 78 conference, IRNA reported.

The Group of 78 is civil society organization of Canadians to promote Canadian and global action for peace and disarmament, equitable and sustainable development, and a strong and revitalized United Nations system.

The former diplomat referred to the US charges about Iran's role in the region and said if the US fully implements its own commitments to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), it could expect a dialogue with Tehran on regional issues.

Elaborating on the foreign military and political interference aimed at regime change in Iran, he said Iran’s doctrine is defensive and it has no other choice but to fight its enemies outside its borders rather than encounter them inside the country.

Mousavian called for a new security cooperation arrangement for the region with the presence of Persian Gulf littoral states, Iran and Iraq in the interest of the peoples and stability in the strategic Middle East.

He said cooperation among the UN Security Council member states as well as the key regional powers including Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt and Iraq is crucial for sustainable  peace and security.
