Eight members of the self-styled Islamic State (Daesh) terrorist group who attacked the Parliament and the mausoleum of the Founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini in Tehran last year will be executed. The death sentences have been sent to the prosecutor’s office, said Moussa Qazanfarabadi, the head of Tehran’s Islamic Revolutionary Court, Tasnim News Agency reported on Friday. He said the eight men had been found guilty of “participating in crimes punishable by death”. The sentences would be carried out after approval by the judiciary chief.

In June 2017, Daesh carried out simultaneous attacks on the Majlis and the shrine of Imam Khomeini. A total of 17 people were killed during the attacks.

The eight convicts sentenced to death are among a total of 26 arrested in the aftermath of the attacks mainly in operations along the borders with Iraq and Turkey. They have appealed the sentences to the Supreme Court.

Cases of the remaining 18 Daesh members who were involved in last year’s attacks in Tehran are under  investigation.
