Foreign ministers from Iran and five world powers will meet in Austrian capital Friday to try to save the 2015 nuclear deal, or JCPOA, which has been imperiled after the US withdrawal. In the meeting, which is being held upon Iran’s request–Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his counterparts from France, Germany, China, Russia and Britain, will discuss an economic package that the European countries have promised to present to Iran in the coming days in order to keep the nuclear deal alive in the absence of the United States. The meeting comes weeks after two meetings between the deputy foreign ministers of the six nations in Vienna and Tehran. The Europeans have been trying to salvage the nuclear deal by securing Iran's economic interests after the controversial US departure in early May. The announcement comes as President Hassan Rohani, accompanied by Zarif, is visiting Switzerland before heading to neighboring Austria. President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the accord in May and moved to reinstate economic sanctions against Tehran. US officials also warned that other nations would face sanctions unless they stopped doing business with Iran.
