Syria Appreciates Help in Fighting Terror

Syrian deputy foreign minister, Faisal Mekdad, thanked Iran for its support in fighting terrorism in his country, saying that without Tehran’s help Damascus would have not gained much success against terrorists.

“The alliance between Iran and Syria was formed under severe [outside] pressure and propaganda attacks, because they wish to prevent us from gaining ultimate victory,” he said, Mehr News Agency reported.

He made the remarks in a meeting with the Leader’s senior adviser Ali Akbar Velayati in Tehran on Tuesday.

“Alongside Iran’s support, we have backing from Hezbollah and Russian partners, who had an effective role in Syria’s victories.”

“Everyone knows that certain Persian Gulf littoral governments have provided  financial help to terrorists and armed groups against the Syrian people,” said Mekdad.

The same governments are now trying to separate us from our friends such as Iran, but Syria has proved that it will never move away from its allies in difficult times, he told Velayati.

“Allies of Saudi Arabia and some other Persian Gulf littoral states armed and deployed murderers, while our allies, including Iran, Russia and Hezbollah, are indeed defending Syria’s territorial integrity.”

Mekdad opined that without Syria’s allies fighting against terrorists, the reach of terrorism would have spread across the globe.

Velayati, a former foreign minister, reaffirmed Iran’s continued support for the war-ravaged country and its war on terrorism.
