India Against Unilateral Sanctions

India’s Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj said her country does not accept unilateral sanctions against Iran. Swaraj was making a passing reference to US President Donald Trump’s controversial exit last month from the Iran nuclear deal and his calls for reimposing economic sanctions on Tehran.

She made the remark in a meeting Sunday at Tabriz International Airport with the governor general of East Azarbaijan Province, Majid Khodabakhsh.

Indian officials were returning home from a European tour and had a stop in Tabriz for refueling.

Regarding her tour of European capitals, Swaraj said one of the main issues she discussed with EU leaders was the  2015 Iran nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, Mehr News Agency reported.

The minister said she informed French President Emanuel Macron that if Europe wants Iran to stick to its commitments in the nuclear agreement, Europe should do likewise and adhere to its commitments regarding financial support for Tehran.

If Europe and Iran agree on trading in Euro, India would also be willing to use the single currency for trading with Iran, she said.

Khodabakhsh appreciated India’s relations with Iran, especially before the implementation of the nuclear deal when Iran was under harsh economic sanctions.
