In a meeting with the Head of the Foreign Policy Strategic Council Kamal Kharrazi, Italian Foreign Minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi voiced support for preserving the Iran nuclear deal in the wake of US withdrawal. Milanesi reiterated the European Union's position on full support for the JCPOA, and deemed the agreement an important document for non-proliferation of nuclear weapons which can guarantee peace and security at the regional and international level. Following the meeting behind closed doors in Rome, Kharrazi told IRNA correspondent that the two sides discussed expansion of bilateral ties and ways to preserve the JCPOA. “Iran wants solid EU guarantees with regard to JCPOA," Kharrazi said. "We believe that the EU’s mere political stances  are not sufficient [guarantees] for us.” Italy is doing all it can to implement the JCPOA, Kharrazi quoted the Italian minister as saying. "I hope that Iran and Italy will continue with their efforts to expand and broaden bilateral relations," Kharazzi, a former foreign minister, was quoted as saying.  Kharrazi was due to meet with high-ranking officials in Vatican and later arrive in Spain.
