A senior official called on the United Nations to adopt a more comprehensive plan for the process of reconstruction in Iraq.
Parliament's General Director for International Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian made the call in a meeting with Alice Walpole, deputy special representative for political affairs and electoral assistance of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, Mehr News Agency reported.
During the meeting on Tuesday in Tehran, Amir-Abdollahian highlighted the need for a more effective UN participation in Iraqi reconstruction and promotion of security, stability and welfare of its people. “The UN needs to pursue a more comprehensive plan for the reconstruction process in Iraq.”
Iraq should not be used as a place for retaliatory moves and conflict of some regional and trans-regional countries, he stressed.
Recent Iraqi victories in the fight against the self-styled Islamic State terrorist group and the country’s parliamentary election deserve strong support from the international community, he told the visiting UN official.
He voiced Iran’s backing the Arab neighbor “so that the war-torn country would be able to play its natural role in the region.”
The UN official thanked Iran for its contribution in combating terrorism and assisting Iraq, saying “Iraqi reconstruction requires global and all-out efforts through international organizations and participation of neighboring countries.”
The two sides expressed optimism at the political process and the future of Iraq.
First Vice President Es'haq Jahangiri said in March Tehran is willing to allocate a $3 billion credit line for post-war Iraqi reconstruction.
