Iran has no plans to extend the range of its missiles since their 2,000-km (1,240-mile) reach is enough to protect the country, Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari said on Tuesday.
“We have the scientific ability to increase our missile range but it is not our current policy since most of the enemies’ strategic targets are within the 2,000-km range. This range is enough to protect the Islamic Republic,” Jafari was quoted as saying by Tasnim News Agency.
The US and its allies have been demanding that Iran curb its missile development program. Although there are no restrictions on the range of missiles, US President Donald Trump insists that limitations be imposed on Tehran’s missile program as a precondition for Washington remaining in the landmark 2015 nuclear deal with Iran. When Tehran refused to comply he angrily pulled out of the agreement on May 8.
Iran have said that its missile program is for deterrence, ruling out any possibility for negotiations over the sovereign issue.
