Iran’s top negotiator in the Syria peace talks in the Astana process met with UN special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura in Tehran on Sunday. The two men exchanged views about the opening of the Syrian Constitution Committee.

Stressing Tehran’s stable and constructive position on resolving the Syrian crisis, Hossein Jaberi Ansari presented to de Mistura a set of initiatives and proposals, Mehr News Agency reported.

The UN special envoy, for his part, welcomed the proposals and presented his views on the matter as he urged the need for resumption of bilateral and multilateral consultations between the three guarantor countries of Astana (Iran, Turkey, Russia), Syria’s government and its opposition and the UN for the formation and activity of the Syrian constitution committee.

“Special envoy de Mistura just concluded substantive consultations on the Syrian political process in Tehran with senior officials,” reads the note to media published on the official website of the UN. “The special envoy will be  continuing regional consultations in the coming days.” The main focus was on the Syrian Constitution Committee to convene on June 18, and 19 in Geneva between the representatives of the three guarantor states and the UN special envoy.
