Int’l Community Should Protect Rule of Law

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in a Twitter message on Thursday referred to the recent letter he sent to his counterparts around the world, urging the international community to save the rule of law. “My letter to fellow foreign ministers was on steps to address US' unlawful withdrawal from JCPOA. Its ever-expanding economic bullying requires action to save not just the accord, but multilateralism and the rule of law,” Zarif wrote in his Twitter account.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi earlier said Zarif in a detailed letter explained the latest situation of the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, in the wake of the US unilateral exit from the deal on May 8, IRNA reported.

      Breach on UN Charter

In the letter, Zarif called the US exit from the deal between Iran, the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and Germany “impulsive, unlawful and provocative.” Zarif wrote that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s threats to punish countries that continue to deal with Iran violated US commitments to the JCPOA, "failed to comply with the unanimously adopted" UNSC Resolution 2231 that endorses the deal and "breached the Charter of the United Nations and showed their contempt for international law.”

The JCPOA put an end to an unnecessary crisis which lasted for over a decade, Zarif noted, stressing that the nuclear agreement was attested to and endorsed by the UNSC Resolution 2231.

“This means that the JCPOA does not belong only to its signatories, and thus the government of one party cannot violate its irresponsibly and arbitrarily based on its domestic policies or political divisions with its predecessors,” he noted.

      Iran’s Commitment

Zarif stressed that despite Washington’s repeated violations and incomplete implementation of the nuclear deal since its early days, Iran has remained completely committed to its pledges under the historic agreement.

The letter said the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN nuclear watchdog, has repeatedly confirmed that Iran has lived up to its obligations of the nuclear accord. Zarif wrote, “If the JCPOA is to survive, the remaining JCPOA participants need to ensure that Iran is unconditionally compensated.”

      No to Bullying

The foreign minister said that each member of the international community is required to stand up to the US violation of law, bullying and disregard for rule of law.

The United States should not be allowed to threaten other countries or to go against the contents of the Security Council resolution, Zarif said.

“The US cannot force other countries to violate a resolution issued under the Article 25 of the United Nations Charter.”

This article requires all states to “take appropriate measures to support the implementation of the JCPOA, including taking action in line with the implementation of the JCPOA and this resolution, as well as avoiding actions that undermine the fulfillment of the JCPOA-bound obligations,” Zarif added.
