Morocco Has Failed to Present Evidence

The Foreign Ministry spokesman says Morocco has failed to present any evidence for its allegations against Iran supporting a liberationist movement in the African country, calling on Rabat to refrain from rhetoric.

Bahram Qassemi made the remarks in response to the recent claims made by Moroccan officials that Tehran has helped the Polisario Front, a Western Sahara independence movement. Rabat severed diplomatic relations with Iran over the allegations two weeks ago.

“Neither in their meeting with the foreign minister of our country nor in their interviews with media outlets, the authorities of the country (Morocco) did not present any conclusive evidence to prove their claims,” Mehr News Agency reported. He criticized Moroccan officials for taking anti-Iran stances on several occasions after Rabat severed its relations with Tehran.

“After breaking ties with Iran due to a baseless reason, Moroccan officials now have difficulty justifying their action before public opinion both at home and abroad. That is why we see that country’s foreign minister and government spokesman give interviews and repeat the same old rhetoric against Iran,” said the spokesman.

“The officials (in Rabat) have not presented any valid evidence to prove their claims, and that is why they are unable to offer any convincing answers to the questions and ambiguities surrounding their decision,” he said.

He said it seems officials in Morocco think they can make the public believe their unfounded charges by repeating them instead of presenting credible evidence. Qassemi reiterated Iran’s declared foreign policy of non-interference in other countries’ internal affairs and respect for their national security.

“We have announced time and again that Iran attaches special importance to the national security of other countries, and within this framework we hope Morocco’s recent move to sever relations with Iran was not a part of new regional alignment and under the pressure of certain governments that are standing against the Islamic Republic of Iran today.”

"Moreover,  we hope their severance of relations with Iran is not in line with contributing to US and Israeli plans against anti-Zionist resistance in the region,” he was quoted as saying.
