Support for Afghan Defense, Security Needs Will Continue

Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Bagheri says Iran has spared no effort to help the security in Afghanistan. Bagheri made the remarks in a meeting with the visiting Afghanistan Defense Minister Tariq Shah Bahrami in Tehran on Sunday, Mehr News Agency reported.

He reiterated Iran's willingness to continue to assist Afghanistan, saying the Islamic Republic's affinity is rooted in the two neighbors' common culture and civilization.

"After the victory of the Islamic Revolution [in 1979] and the military invasion of Afghanistan [by the former Soviet Union in the same year], Iran has always tried to stand by the Afghan people and the Mujahedin and help them in their struggle against the occupiers," Baqeri said.

The Mujahideen were Afghan guerrilla groups that fought and defeated the Red Army during its occupation of the impoverished Muslim country from 1979 to 1989.

Bagheri added that the shared background between the two countries,  including religion and language, have brought them together in such way that no obstacle can undermine the cordial relations.

The general also expressed hope that the Afghan military delegation’s visit would result in closer interaction between the two armed forces.

Bahrami said his tour was aimed at expanding cordial relations between the two nations and their armed forces and soliciting Iran's help in Kabul’s long war against terrorism.

He expressed the hope that peace and stability would be restored to Afghanistan and by extension to the whole region.
