A senior lawmaker says the gains made by Hezbollah and its allies in Lebanon’s parliamentary elections at the weekend will lead to the formation of a new government in Beirut that will be supportive of the resistance movement in that country and apparently disinclined to do the biddings of US, Israel or Saudi Arabia.

In a talk  with ICANA on Tuesday, Hossein Naqavi Hosseini said, “Despite the efforts by the United States, its western allies, the Zionist regime, and in particular the Saudis, to undermine Lebanon’s security and create problems before the vote, the people went to the ballot box in a calm and tranquil atmosphere and the outcome was victory for Hezbollah.”

Hezbollah and its political allies won just over half the seats in parliament, according to final results from all but one of the 15 electoral districts, Reuters reported.

One despicable example of Saudi attempts to interfere in Lebanon’s internal affairs was exposed last November when Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri announced his resignation in Riyadh over what he claimed was “Hezbollah’s interference in the region”–a move many observers said was another failed bid to smear the group’s popularity in the country.

However, the Saudi move backfired when Hezbollah publicly called on Hariri to rescind his resignation–which he later did.

The incident helped put Hezbollah on a higher pedestal as a political force to reckon with and a vision that accords priority to Lebanon’s unity and sovereignty, eventually making the faction more popular and credible in the country of six million people.
