Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif conferred with Syrian Grand Mufti Sheikh Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun on late Wednesday.
In the meeting, Zarif expressed his congratulations on the auspicious occasion of the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and "Unity Week" and highlighted scholars' key role in helping deal with plots against the Muslim World and thwart the current attempts to tarnish the image of Islam, ISNA reported.
Every year, Muslims hold gatherings and ceremonies to foster unity among them during "Unity Week" which is observed around the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH). The founder of the Islamic Republic, the late Imam Khomeini, introduced the initiative. Zarif also referred to the common threats facing Muslims and noted, "The costs of such threats are imposed on Muslims by those who never care about the interests of Muslims."
The foreign minister said, "Provoking division and sedition is to the benefit of no one in the Muslim World and those who foment strife should bear in mind that they will ultimately suffer the repercussions of their actions."
Hassoun, for his part, referred to Iran's role in helping maintain unity among Muslims and said Iran has always been a supporter of the "true Islam".
Praising Iran for its assistance to the Syrian nation and government, he said, "When the enemies observed Iran's scientific, technological, industrial and military achievements (which had been attained) without their assistance, they tried to hatch religious plots to pursue their evil objective of changing the order in the region."
