Iranian and Omani military officials explored ways to expand cooperation on security and defense matters during a meeting in Tehran on Saturday.  The talks were held between General Qadir Nezami, deputy chairman of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces in charge of international affairs, and Brigadier General Hamad bin Rashid al-Balushi, assistant chief of staff for operations and planning of the Sultan of Oman's Armed Forces, ISNA reported.  A range of issues, including steps to enhance the security of the Sea of Oman, featured in the talks.  The Omani top brass traveled to Iran to participate in the 14th joint military commission.  Before the meeting, Nezami told reporters that joint naval drills will be held in the coming days to increase the preparedness of Iranian and Omani forces to protect the Strait of Hormuz, the world's most important oil export route.  He hailed close bilateral relations, adding that collaboration between Muslim states can help promote security, peace and stability in a region beset with turmoil.
