Body Cameras on Police Officers Producing Results

To further augment transparency and to monitor law enforcement, more police officers will be equipped with body-worn cameras, a senior  police official said on Saturday.

“Equipping police officers with body-worn cameras is crucial [as it can be a tool] to monitor the work of officers on duty and lawbreakers,” General Mohammad Sharafi was quoted as saying by mashreghnews.ir.

Sharafi said 1,000 officers were equipped with body cameras in last fiscal year (ended March 20), adding that “we expect this number to double this year.”

“The feedback we got from the cameras was positive. In many cases when the footages were shown to parties involved in street fight lawsuits [which were broken up by the police], both sides were satisfied with such documented evidence,” he noted.

The report comes as a video showing a female member of morality police physically confronting a woman in Tehran went viral on Friday.

Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli has called on police to investigate the matter.
