Defense Minister Amir Hatami arrived in Baghdad Wednesday to explore ways to build defense cooperation between the two neighbors.  Heading a high-ranking delegation, Hatami will attend a meeting with his Iraqi counterpart about the prospects of developing two-way defense ties, Tasnim News Agency reported. Speaking to reporters upon arrival, the minister said several issues, including the fight against terrorism in the region, would be raised in his talks with the Iraqi top brass.  The talks will include the latest regional developments, particularly the recent US air strikes on Syria, Hatami said.

Iraq has been facing the threat of terrorism in recent years, mainly posed by the self-styled Islamic State terrorist group that wreaked havoc on the country since 2014. Iraqi forces, with Iran’s help, defeated the IS late last year. Amid tensions in Iraq, Iran was among the first country to help the Arab neighbor and has voiced support for Iraq’s territorial integrity and prosperity.
