Flights to Iraqi Kurdistan Resume Next Week

Flights between Iraqi Kurdistan region and Iran will resume next week following a few months’ hiatus due to an air embargo Baghdad had imposed on international flights to and from Kurdish airports last year. Morteza Ebadi, Iran’s consul general in Erbil—seat of Iraqi Kurdistan, said Tehran-Erbil flights are scheduled to resume on April 27, Mehr News Agency reported. Two flights will be conducted on Tuesdays and Fridays and steps will be taken to increase the number of flights, Ebadi said. He noted that the flights will help enhance mutual interaction between businesses on both sides and expand tourism. Baghdad had suspended flights to and from Kurdish airports after the Kurds voted overwhelmingly to break away from Iraq in a banned secession referendum on Sept. 25 last year, defying the central government in Baghdad, Turkey and Iran.Last month, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi decided to lift the air embargo on two Kurdish airports.
