Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif left Tehran for Tajik capital Dushanbe on Monday to take part in the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) meeting on Tuesday.

He will attend the 23rd ECO Ministerial Meeting which will host ministers and deputy foreign ministers of members of the organization, Mehr News Agency reported.

ECO is a Eurasian political and economic intergovernmental organization which was founded in 1985. It provides a platform to discuss ways to improve development and promote trade.

Zarif is slated to hold talks with senior Tajik officials and discuss issue of mutual interest and concern.

This is the Zarif’s second visit of the neighboring Central Asian nation in the past few months.

He was there last November in what was billed as first visit of its kind in several years.

Ties between the two nations, both Persian-speaking and predominantly Muslim, have been strained since a leader of a banned Tajik Islamist party attended a conference in Tehran in December 2015, which angered the government in Dushanbe.

During a trip to Saudi Arabia in January 2016, Tajik President Imomali Rahmon received loans and financial aid from the Saudi government in what many believed were Riyadh’s attempts to pry a good ally away from Iran.
