President Hassan Rouhani has said Iran attaches "special importance" to its relations with the East Asian countries.

The president made the remarks in a meeting with North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Su-yong in Tehran on Tuesday.

Tehran and Pyongyang can utilize their potential to boost bilateral relations, he said.

"The two countries have had very good and friendly relations throughout history," he said, underlining the need for increased consultations and cooperation between the two countries' officials to help strengthen ties.

In addition, Rouhani said Iran favors peace and security in the Korean Peninsula, adding some countries are seeking to "ignite fire" in the region.
