Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament Salim al-Jbouri said on Wednesday Iran and Iraq need to enhance relations during the reconstruction era in the Arab country.

In a meeting with Ambassador Iraj Masjedi, the Iraqi lawmaker said, “The two countries common interests and bilateral relations should be promoted in all fields,” IRNA reported.

Echoing the need for expanding two-way ties, the Iranian envoy said, “Iran, as a country that stood by Iraq in its fight against terrorism, will also contribute to its reconstruction effort.”

He highlighted the need to enhance mutual cooperation in the economic, trade and development sectors in interest of the two peoples.

Iraq has seen devastating wars in its recent history, from the Gulf War in 1991 to the recent havocs caused by the self-styled Islamic state.

Those wars have left many in the country dead and led millions displaced.

Iran’s envoy to Iraq this week held talks with senior officials of the country, including President Fouad Masoum and his deputy Nouri al-Maliki.
