The US views Saudi Arabia as a mere source of income rather than a strategic ally, a lawmaker said in Tehran, after US President Donald Trump complained that the oil kingdom has not contributed enough resources to the war on terror.
“Saudis have placed too much reliance on the US, which is wrong because Washington is taking advantage of the situation to exploit Riyadh financially,” Yahya Kamalipour told ICANA on Saturday.
“If history is any guide, the United States is not known to be loyal to its allies and has not been honest with other parties in any negotiations. So it can never be trusted as a reliable partner for other countries,” he added.
Trump is seething over the billions in American money being spent in Syria and has complained that US allies, particularly Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, have not done enough in the fight against the self-styled Islamic State terrorist group.
“Without us you wouldn’t last two weeks. You’d be overrun. And you’d have to fly commercial,” he allegedly told an unidentified Arab monarch from the Persian Gulf, the Evening Standard reported.
