Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati was reelected as chairman of the Assembly of Experts.
The powerful clerical body has the power to appoint and dismiss the Leader of Islamic Revolution and monitor his performance.
In a vote in the Tuesday session of the 88-member assembly, 66 attendees supported his reappointment, while Ayatollahs Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi and Mohammad Ali Movahedi Kermani were separately chosen as first and second deputy chairmen of the assembly with 70 and 72 votes respectively, IRNA reported.
Ayatollahs Seyyed Ahmad Khatami and Abbas Ka'bi received 50 and 42 votes to win the other two seats on the assembly's five-member presiding board.
Ayatollah Jannati has also been heading the Guardians Council since 1992.
The council comprises half clerics and half jurists tasked with reviewing any legislation approved by parliament for conformity with the Constitution and Islamic law.
Its oversight mandate also includes vetting candidates for any election except that for the city councils.
The six clerics on the council are directly appointed by the Leader of Islamic Revolution, while the lawyers are nominated by the judiciary chief and confirmed by parliament.
The Tuesday appointments came after the high-ranking cleric's resignation as leader of Tehran's Friday prayers was accepted by the Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei last week.
He had earlier offered his resignation in a letter to Ayatollah Khamenei after holding the post for 25 years.
In the letter carried by the Iranian media, he thanked the Leader for his continued support and trust in him throughout the years, without spelling out the reasons for his resignation.
An advanced age, however, is widely believed to have been the main reason behind the 91-year-old cleric's decision.
In his address to the assembly's meeting after the vote, Ayatollah Jannati called for greater unity among all sections of the establishment to help foil plots by the Islamic Republic's adversaries.
