Parliamentarians are contemplating the impeachment of another of President Hassan Rouhani's cabinet members less than two months after Majlis ended a protracted controversy over who should lead the ministry of higher education.

Lawmaker Jabbar Kouchaki said, "Sixty MPs have signed a motion for the impeachment of Education Minister Ali Asghar Fanni," IRNA reported.

The authors of the impeachment motion believe Fanni has failed to fulfill the pledges he made to obtain a vote of confidence from parliament in 2013 when he was nominated by President Rouhani.

Mohammad Hassan Dogani said, "Mismanagement in the ministry of education, widespread discontent among teachers and the ministry personnel as well as unequal distribution of education facilities in underprivileged areas are among the reasons behind the impeachment motion."

Opponents of the impeachment, on the other hand, believe Fanni is a qualified minister and has so far managed to properly perform his duties.

The motion has not yet been submitted to the Majlis presiding board.

In November, lawmakers gave a vote of confidence to Rouhani's fifth nominee for the post of minister of higher education, Mohammad Farhadi, putting an end to a months-long standoff between the government and the Majlis.
