Defense Minister Amir Hatami met with Azeri President Ilham Aliyev in Baku on Wednesday.
During the meeting, Hatami hailed successful development of the “friendly” and “brotherly” relations between Azerbaijan and Iran in various areas, including the military-technical field, Trend News Agency reported.
Underling the need for regular reciprocal official visits, Aliyev described the fact that the Azeri and Iranian presidents have held nearly 10 meetings in recent years as a sign of high-level relations between the two countries.
The Azeri president expressed confidence that the Iranian defense chief’s visit would create a good opportunity to discuss the current state and prospects of defense cooperation between Tehran and Baku.
Hatami told Aliyev that Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei always emphasizes that the Islamic Republic has friendly, brotherly, and neighborly relations with Azerbaijan.
Earlier in the day and upon arrival for a two-day visit to the Azeri capital, the defense minister told IRNA, “The two neighboring countries want to expand their defense ties by [exploiting] the geographical and proximity advantages.”
