Sri Lanka Navy has welcomed the Iranian Navy’s 50th flotilla, which arrived at the Port of Colombo on Friday.

The naval fleet, comprising Tunb logistic-combat warship and Shaheed Naqdi and Bayandor destroyers, is visiting Sri Lanka as part of the Iranian Navy’s missions in the Indian Ocean and other international waters, according to ColomboPage.

The flotilla has arrived in Sri Lanka with a mission to help promote peace and friendship between the two countries, the report said, citing the Iranian Navy.

A group of students from the Naval Academy of Imam Khomeini are accompanying the fleet as part of their internship, it added.

The flotilla’s captains and crew members were scheduled to visit training centers and also historical and cultural sites in the country.

In recent years, Iran’s Navy has been increasing its presence in international waters to protect naval routes and provide security for Iranian merchant vessels and tankers.
