Trio’s Top Diplomats to Meet on Syria Trio’s Top Diplomats to Meet on Syria

Russian, Iranian, and Turkish foreign ministers will discuss Syria during a meeting in the Kazakh capital Astana in March, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said on Monday.

The exact date in March has not been agreed yet, Anadolu Agency reported.

The establishment of safe zones in Syria will be, among other things, on the talks’ agenda, Bogdanov said.

Commenting on the Turkish military operation in Idlib, Bogdanov said it is above all a subject for discussion between the trio.

Ankara began a cross-border offensive in northwestern Syria against US-backed Kurdish militants last month. The operation has opened a new front in the multi-sided Syrian war.

Separately, the Turkish military said on Friday the construction of a fifth military post near Syria’s northwestern region of Idlib had begun.

Turkey agreed to set up 12 observation posts in Idlib and neighboring provinces under a deal reached with Tehran and Moscow to try to reduce fighting between pro-government forces and terrorist groups in northwest Syria.
