Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said that the development of the economic infrastructure would lead to stronger relations and cooperation between Muslim countries.

"Today, there is significant economic potential in the Islamic world," he said at the 20th session of the General Committee of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Member States known as PUIC in Tehran on Monday.

"The economic infrastructure should be prepared so that Muslim countries can have deeper economic cooperation… We consider economic cooperation with Muslim countries a priority," added Larijani, who was speaking a day before the main summit of the PUIC.

He expressed hope that economic issues would be discussed during the summit and would be followed up after the event to serve the interests of Muslim nations, ISNA reported.

  Palestinian Issue

The parliament speaker also said that the issue of Palestine is one of the main concerns of Muslim countries and has always been high on the agenda of various conferences.

However, support for Palestine has created security problems for some Muslim countries such as Syria and Iraq in recent years, he added.

He said that the issue of Palestine was thrust further into the spotlight after Washington's decision to declare Beit-ul-Moqaddas the capital of Israel.

US President Donald Trump recently announced that Washington recognizes Beit-ul-Moqaddas as Israel's capital. He also approved moving the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Bait-ul-Muqaddas.

In his speech, Larijani noted that Muslim countries should unite and cooperate in the fight against terrorism.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to share its experience in fighting terrorism with other countries and cooperate with them on security issues so that this problem will be resolved in Muslim countries."

  Participants

Lawmaker Kazem Jalali said that the opening ceremony of the main summit of the 13th PUIC conference will be attended by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, the parliament speaker, parliamentary representatives of 44 countries, and a number of other officials.

Sixteen parliamentary speakers and 14 deputy speakers are among the participants, Jalali, the secretary of the conference, told IRNA in an interview published on Monday. The event began on Saturday and closes on Wednesday.
