Warship Sustains Minor Damage in Caspian Sea

Stormy weather caused minor damage to the Damavand destroyer in the Caspian Sea, the Navy said.

The accident occurred on Wednesday morning, when Damavand was docking at port in the northern province of Gilan, the Navy’s regional command said, according to Tasnim News Agency.

A severe storm and high winds in the Caspian Sea caused the destroyer to have a crash with the jetty, it said, adding that military experts have described the damage as minor and that it would be repaired in a short time. Damavand, a 100-meter-long destroyer weighing more than 1300 tons, officially joined the Navy’s northern fleet in March 2015. More than 700 industrial, research and academic Iranian centers cooperated in designing and producing the military vessel, which is also a training warship. Experts with the Defense Ministry have installed 25 homegrown electronics and communications systems on Damavand, including advanced naval radars and systems for communication, detection and interception. Damavand is a Jamaran-class destroyer with unique features to meet the demands of the Iranian naval forces in the country’s northern waters.

The advanced destroyer is capable of tracking aerial, surface and sub-surface targets simultaneously.
