French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian is scheduled to take a day-long trip to Tehran on July 5 for talks with Iranian officials, particularly about Paris' approach toward the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. "Le Drian will arrive on the evening of January 5 in Tehran for a 24-hour stay," a reporter with France 24 wrote on her tweeter account on Tuesday. Tensions between Iran and France have escalated in recent months, as French President Emmanuel Macron has sought to align himself with his US counterpart, Donald Trump, on Iran over non-nuclear issues. French officials have angered Iranians by echoing Trump's call for new curbs on Tehran's regional clout and missile program, which issues are not related to the nuclear deal. Le Drian said last week Paris and Washington are determined to "vigorously" raise pressure on Iran over its ballistic missile program, including possibly through sanctions. Paris and Washington were part of the group of six power nations that negotiated the landmark pact with Iran to scale down its nuclear development in exchange for sanctions relief.
