Lawmakers passed a bill on Wednesday that requires the government to support Beit-ul-Moqaddas as the "eternal capital of Palestine".

The Majlis overwhelmingly approved the bill, with 198 in favor and only one abstention, which adds an amendment to the Support for the Islamic Revolution of Palestinian People Act passed in 1990, IRNA reported.

"Beit-ul-Moqaddas will always be the eternal capital of the state of Palestine," reads the annex.

The act states that the Palestinian land belongs to the Palestinian people and condemns the Zionist regime as an oppressing and occupying regime.

The move by the lawmakers came after US President Donald Trump unilaterally recognized the holy city as the capital of Israel, reversing decades of US policy.

Over 120 countries rebuked Trump by endorsing a non-binding UN General Assembly resolution on Dec 21, calling on the United States to drop its recognition of Beit-ul-Moqaddas. The vote came after the US vetoed the same measure in the Security Council on Dec. 18. It was outnumbered 14 to 1 in that vote.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation condemned the US move on Dec. 14, declaring East Beit-ul-Moqaddas as the capital of Palestine.

Iran does not recognize the Zionist entity and believes the holy city belongs to the Palestinian people in its entirety.
