Incumbent and former officials must be careful not to help the anti-Iran propaganda campaign by making groundless allegations against state bodies

Leader of Islamic Revolution stressed the need for protecting Iranians’ confidence in the system in the face of an extensive propaganda campaign waged by hostile powers, saying officials should be wary not to ease the burden on adversaries by making baseless accusations against government bodies.

Speaking in a meeting with members of the Coordination Council of Islamic Publicity in Tehran on Wednesday, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said adversaries are actively spreading falsehoods among people to crush their “hope”.

“The most important goal of enemies’ soft war is to ruin hope and self-confidence of the Iranian nation,” the Leader’s official website quoted him as saying.

The Leader said propagation organizations and media outlets must work to counter hostile powers’ campaign to cast doubt about the system’s performance.

The campaign, Ayatollah Khamenei said, aims to highlight weaknesses through various methods, including “publishing baseless statistics, making false claims, vilifying popular figures and denying achievements of the Islamic Revolution.”

The Leader said incumbent and former officials must be careful not to help the anti-Iran campaign by making groundless allegations against state bodies.

“Those who had been controlling government facilities and those who hold management posts are not entitled to play the role of opposition. They should be responsible [for their own record].”

The Leader was apparently referring to recent remarks by former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accusing the judiciary authorities of corruption, as well as senior officials in Hassan Rouhani’s administration blaming Ahmadinejad for the economic woes facing the country.

“Of course our judicial system is not faultless and I’m not unaware of deficiencies of the judiciary and government, but we should see positive and negative points together,” he said.

  Resistance Economy

The Leader said government officials must work harder to prepare the country for tolerating severe sanctions, the main weapon of adversaries against Iran.

“Officials must pay more attention to resistance economy and stop only talking about it, and know that resistance economy is inconsistent with unfettered imports and weak domestic production,” he said.

Resistance Economy is a set of principles aimed at making the country immune to economic wars waged by foreign powers, through curbing the economy’s dependence on oil export revenues, improving productivity and reducing the government role in the economy.

It was first proposed by the Leader in 2011, amid the tightening of economic sanctions against Tehran by the US and its allies over unproven allegations that Tehran intends to build nuclear weapons.

The Leader has frequently advocated resistance economy in his speeches this year, particularly since the controversial US President Donald Trump came to power to harden the line on Iran.

Trump has revived the nearly forgotten US mantra that “all options are on the table” when it comes to Iran, and has imposed various sanctions to increase pressure on the Islamic Republic.
