A foreign ministry official has expressed concern over stepped-up security measures by the Bahraini government against political and religious figures and constitutional societies in the Persian Gulf Arab state. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Marzieh Afkham on Sunday warned that such intensification of security approaches and pressure would only further complicate Bahrain’s situation. She urged Bahraini officials to adopt confidence-building measures in an attempt to prepare the ground for serious dialog between the government and people, Press TV reported. Afkham’s remarks came after Bahraini police on Sunday interrogated Sheikh Ali Salman, the secretary general of Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society (the main opposition bloc), over what has been described as “violations” of law.
