US Lawmakers Call for Iran Sanctions Over Yemen

A pair of Republican lawmakers is pushing to impose sanctions on Iran for its alleged destabilizing activities in Yemen.

Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Ted Poe, both senior members of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, introduced a bill to sanction Iran for its support for the Houthi fighters in Yemen, the Hill reported.

“The Iranians need to be held accountable for the mess and war they are perpetuating in Yemen. This bill will send a clear message to Tehran to stop their activities or pay the price,” Poe claimed in a statement on Monday.

The Houthis stormed Yemen’s capital in 2015 and pushed out the government of Saudi-allied fugitive president Abd-Rabbuh Mansour Hadi. Saudi-backed military forces have not been able to remove the Houthis in their deadly campaign in support of the ousted government.

Iran blames the unfolding humanitarian crisis in the impoverished Arab country on Saudi intervention and says it only provides “advisory and spiritual assistance” to Houthis.

The US has engaged in intelligence cooperation and provided aid to the Saudi coalition planes that have conducted indiscriminate bombings that have killed thousands of Yemeni men, women and children.
